Samsung Note 2 – Updating to Android 4.3 Stock ROM and Re-rooting Guide

Below steps were tested with Samsung Note 2 (GT-N7100) running Android 4.1.2 having PDA N7100XXDMB5 / baseband N7100XXDLK7. After the upgrading from Android 4.1.2 to Android 4.3 stock ROM, all the Samsung applications that comes with Note 2, including SNote were working perfectly.

Note : If it is not required to root the device once 4.3 update is complete, you will (most probably) be able to keep existing data / applications  without any problem. However, if you plan to root the device,  it is most likely that you will have to do a factory reset in order to get it working. Therefore, it is recommended to follow  backup procedures mentioned below.

Step 1 – (Optional / Recommended) – EFS Backup

BFS Backup - Download EFS backup script (Windows) at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255943 and follow instructions provided to make sure you have backup of devices EFS partition, just in case anything goes wrong. (Root required)

Secondary EFB Backup – Use method from this XDA thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2269318 to make a secondary backup of EFS partition using terminal emulator. (Root required)

What is EFS :

Part of the device contains information such as IMEI (or MEID and ESN in the case of CDMA devices), programming parameters for the device such as your account information (phone number, etc), data provisioning parameters

Step 2 – (Optional / Recommended) - Backup personal information / data

You may use numerous applications available at Play Store and other sources  to backup messages / application data. Such details are excluded from this guide as it is out of the scope of this guide.

Step 3 – (Optional / Recommended) – Make NANDROID backup

Follow guide from http://gs3.wonderhowto.com/how-to/completely-back-up-your-samsung-galaxy-s3-using-windows-0142492/ and  Galaxy Note 2 Toolkit available at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956 to make a full backup of the device including existing ROM itself, so that you can restore it if anything goes wrong.

Step 4 – Updating to Android 4.3

  1. Make sure you have at least 75% battery charge before starting this process.
  2. Go to http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ and search for device N7100.
  3. In search results search for the closest Country  or the Carrier, having version 4.3 available. (I am from Sri Lanka, therefore I used Indian version – N7100XXUEMKD). You may use the advanced search to look for exact match.
  4. Download Odin3 v3.07 (Not the latest v3.09, etc.) from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189539
  5. Run Odin3 as Administrator
  6. Switch off the device. Place the phone in Download Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down, Home and Power buttons together until Android robot icon appears on screen. Now press the Volume Up button to enter  Download Mode.
  7. Connect the phone to computer using USB cable while it is in Download Mode.
  8. The successful connection will be indicated by an Added message in Odin and also the one of the ID: COM box will turn light blue with the COM port number.  (If this does not happen, try using another USB port)
  9. Click the PDA button and select the file with .tar.md5 extension available within the ZIP file downloaded from SamMobile. (Something similar to : N7100XXUEMKD_N7100ODDEMK1_N7100DDEMK1_HOME.tar.md5)
  10. If ZIP file contains additional files with names including MODEM, CSC or PIT select those under relevant fields of Odin. (Most probably you will only have to select the PDA file for 4.3 update)
  11. Enable Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time checkboxes in Odin window. But ensure Re-Partition option is unchecked, select it only when .pit file is used.
  12. Double check everything and select Start.
  13. Phone will restart after update is complete and PASS message with green background  will be displayed in the left-most box at the top of Odin.
  14. After reboot check if device start up without any problem (without boot-loop). If boot loop occur try clearing cache and dalvik cache following these steps : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIyYHfb1Afg. If clearing cache does not work, you will have to rest phone to factory defaults to stop the bool-loop. Follow steps from : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU1gT6_x360
